Allen & Heath ZED-10FX 10-Channel Mixer with Effects
★★★★★ 4.7
✅ In stock — 7 available
The Allen and Heath ZED-10FX is a small mixer built by a company that makes large ones. That lineage shows in the two places it matters most: the microphone preamps and the equaliser. For a compact desk aimed at podcasters, small bands, church side-rooms and home studios, it punches far above the size of its footprint. WHY THE PREAMPS MATTER Allen and Heath designed the GS-R24 and the dLive consoles that sit in serious venues, and the same preamp thinking filters down into the ZED range. The microphone inputs are quiet and have plenty of gain, which is the specification that decides whether a dynamic microphone sounds full or thin. Low-output dynamics such as the Shure SM7B need a lot of clean gain, and thin, hissy preamps are the reason many small mixers disappoint people who buy a good microphone and wonder why it sounds weak. The DuoPre design used here gives you usable gain across the range without the noise floor climbing to meet you. KEY SPECIFICATIONS Configuration: 10-input compact analogue mixer Microphone inputs: 4 with phantom power Line inputs: stereo line channels Equaliser: 3-band on mono channels with swept mid Effects: 16 onboard digital effects with tap tempo Auxiliary sends: pre and post fade sends for monitors and effects USB: bidirectional stereo USB for recording and playback Outputs: balanced main outputs, monitor output, headphone output Phantom power: 48 V, globally switched Metering: LED metering on the main output Construction: steel chassis with a powder-coated finish Power: external universal power supply THE SWEPT MID IS THE FEATURE PEOPLE UNDERESTIMATE Most budget mixers give you a fixed mid control that boosts or cuts at a frequency chosen by the manufacturer. The ZED-10FX lets you sweep the mid band to the frequency that is actually causing the problem. In practice that means you can find the boxy 300 Hz build-up in a room, or the harsh 3 kHz in a vocal, and reduce it precisely instead of scooping out a broad range and dulling the whole channel. For live sound in untreated rooms, which is nearly every hall in the country, a swept mid is the single most useful equalisation control on the desk. THE USB CONNECTION The bidirectional USB means the ZED-10FX doubles as a basic audio interface. You can record a stereo mix of a service, a rehearsal or a podcast straight into a laptop, and play backing tracks out of the laptop into the desk. It is not a multitrack interface, so it will not replace a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 for studio work, but for capturing a stereo record of what happened, it is genuinely useful and requires no extra hardware. WHO THIS IS FOR Podcasters and content creators running two to four microphones. Small churches with a compact platform. Rehearsal rooms. Schools with a drama or music department. Solo performers and duos who need a reliable front-of-house mixer that fits in a bag. Home studios that want good preamps and real knobs rather than menus. The 16 onboard effects, with tap tempo for the delays, cover the reverb and delay needs of small live work without a rack of outboard gear. HOW IT FITS A SYSTEM A typical setup: two vocal microphones and an instrument into the mono channels, a phone or laptop into the stereo channels, the main outputs feeding a pair of powered speakers, and the aux send feeding a stage monitor. That is a complete small-venue system, and the ZED-10FX sits comfortably at the centre of it. If you need more inputs later, the ZED range scales up and the operating logic stays the same, so nothing you learn is wasted. PRACTICAL NOTES Use balanced XLR cables from the main outputs to your powered speakers. Unbalanced leads over any distance pick up hum, especially near lighting dimmers, and that hum is very hard to remove afterwards. Switch phantom power on before you bring the fader up, and leave it off for microphones that do not need it. Phantom is global on this desk, so plan your channel layout with that in mind. Keep the desk out of direct sun and away from drinks. It is a steel chassis and it will take normal handling, but no mixer survives a spilled soda. WARRANTY, DELIVERY AND ADVICE Genuine Allen and Heath stock with a 12-month warranty, delivered nationwide with payment by M-Pesa or cash on delivery. WHY THE PREAMPS MATTER
Allen and Heath designed the GS-R24 and the dLive consoles that sit in serious venues, and the same preamp thinking filters down into the ZED range. THE SWEPT MID IS THE FEATURE PEOPLE UNDERESTIMATE
Most budget mixers give you a fixed mid control that boosts or cuts at a frequency chosen by the manufacturer.
THE USB CONNECTION
The bidirectional USB means the ZED-10FX doubles as a basic audio interface.
